The Humane Society of the United States is involved in more than keeping animals which have been rescued for people to come and adopt. While part of the work conducted by the organization is to help the local organizations in their work, HSUS’s work is usually more than that. Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty is the motto of the organization and represents the complex work that is carried out by the organization.
Today in the world, there are a thousand of animal species. Part of the work that HSUS gets involved in is to protect, save, and rescue these animals. The organization works globally not just in the United States and has been involved in work to save animals found deep in the Ocean. The animals rescued by the organization have been involved in racing, rodeos, Zoos, circuses, hunting, fashion, aquariums and research. However, these are some of the activities because the list is long.
It is the work of HSUS to work with pet owners in ensuring their safety and security and also providing the support to the other local animal shelters The organization is also presenting pushing for pieces of legislation both locally and internationally. These laws are meant to curb animal cruelty. When disasters such as the Katrina have occurred, animals are always affected. In such scenarios the HSUS is always ready to travel in the area to help in the rescue mission of the animals. HSU also has a program of educating backyard owners of how to coexist with backyard animals such as the squirrels, mice, and raccoons.
In the united states, HSUS was not the first organization to be involved in animal welfare. The Society for the prevention of cruelty of animals is the first known organization know to advocate for animal rights in the U.S. This was the first organization to advocate for animal rights. More other organizations came up. Follwing a delegates which was carried out in 1887, the delegates agreed the organizations to come together and form the American Humane Association. In 1954 however, there was rift between members and some of those split formed what is now known as HSUS.
The main aim of HSUS is to eradicate animal cruelty worldwide. Among the first pieces of legislation was the one to fight against mistreatment of animals used for research. The organization has led to passing of many laws that protect animals. The laws range from those protecting endangered species to those that make it illegal to mistreat research animals inhumanly.
